5th grade stepped up their reading game during the month of February in order to earn tickets for a kindle fire. The Masons support reading through the Kindle for Books program. These two were our lucky winners this year. Congratulations!

In social studies we have been studying how mining was a big part of what brought people to Montana. We started with an exploration to see where people came from all around the world to mine for copper in Butte. We also learned about the environmental impacts that the mining has had on Butte. Then we did some mining of our own to extract some precious minerals from a cookie. They were then challenged to try and reclaim their mining site to repair their cookie to look like it did before the mining occurred. They came to the conclusion that it was nearly impossible to repair cookie, but it sure was tasty!

It was an incredible honor to host Malia Kipp at Bonner School today. Ms. Kipp played for the Lady Griz in the 1990s as the first Indigenous woman from Montana to play Division I basketball on a full-ride scholarship. At that time, she was only one of three in the country. A valuable role model, Ms. Kipp is the subject a documentary called Native Ball, featured this week at the Big Sky Film Festival. Our 8th graders watched the film and met with Ms. Kipp during a Q&A session. The experiences and insights of Ms. Kipp were absolutely inspiring and we are grateful for her generosity!

This week Ms. Barrick’s TK students learned about the peace symbol/sign. They read books about peace, and talked a lot about what peace looks like, both in the world around them and inside of themselves. They created bright, beautiful peace signs for their bulletin board, and will end the week with a guest from the Read for Peace project, and learn about how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked to bring peace to our nation.

It’s hard to believe that we’re already preparing for the second i-Ready® Diagnostic for math. The second Diagnostic is an important benchmark for understanding your student’s growth, which is why it’s so important they try their best. These results allow us to better support them in achieving their goals for the year. The most important thing we can do is prepare students and motivate them to put forth their best effort. Here are a few things you can do to help support your student: • Make sure they get a good night’s rest before taking the Diagnostic! • Talk to your student about why the second Diagnostic is important. You can say things like: o The second Diagnostic helps you find out how much progress you’ve made since the beginning of the year. o It allows your teacher and I to celebrate your accomplishments! o Try your best, and do not rush—but don’t spend too much time on a question either. o Remember, questions on the Diagnostic change based on your answers to earlier questions. You will see some questions you don’t know. That is okay! Just try your best. • Let them know you’re excited to celebrate their progress. Thank you for your continued partnership in your student’s learning.

We loved having Mr. Hamilton visit our TK class today and read us a silly story. We also practiced writing, cutting, and gluing to make snowmen for our bulletin board. TK is so much fun!
